Last year, Smoky Mountain Urgent Care asked for entries into the contest to name the new mascot for the urgent care and many of the concert attendees submitted worthy names. So this year, Dr. Huskey and Dr. Rothwell thought the the mascot, Dr. Howie Getwell should make an appearance at the concert. Dr. Howie was introduced on stage just before intermission and then hung out with some new friends and made pictures with them. The entire team at Smoky Mountain Urgent Care want to extend their thanks to Jimbo’s efforts to help out the “Rootin’ for Regen” campaign and send their thoughts and prayers to Regen and his family! Also, thanks to all of Dr. Howie Getwell’s new friends for posing for pictures and meeting him. We all had a fantastic time! Dr. Howie Getwell hopes to see you all again real soon so be on the lookout.

We celebrated our second anniversary by hosting another live broadcast of MIXX 105.5’s Steve and Jay with appearances from some of our favorite doctors including Dr. Howie Getwell! Some of you may remember hearing about Dr. Howie when we had our “Name Our Mascot” contest. Dr. Howie greeted patients at the door while posing for pictures with a few lucky visitors. Find out more about Dr. Howie Getwell and see him out and about by clicking HERE and Like him on Facebook.

This Thanksgiving we have been especially thankful for being named the Readers’ Choice winner from The Mountain Press in the category of Walk-In Clinics, and we were also second place for Readers’ Choice Health Care Facility of the year. Also, our very own Dr. Robin A. Huskey, Medical Director for Smoky Mountain Urgent Care, was also voted the Readers’ Choice winner for best Doctor in Family Medicine. We couldn’t be prouder of our incredible staff and doctors who work every day to be here for our patients. Thanks to the entire community who voted for us!

We are so thankful to be able to serve this community and every one of you over the past two years. So remember, whether you are here visiting the Smoky Mountains, riding the Wild Eagle at Dollywood, or you are one of our neighbors here locally, Smoky Mountain Urgent Care’s doctors are here for you 7 days a week from 8am-8pm!

“Thanks,” was all Sevierville 10-year-old Zachary Smith could say as he was awarded his winnings for naming the new Smoky Mountain UrgentCare mascot. Smoky Mountain Urgent Care now calls their bear Dr. Howie Getwell, thanks to Zachary and the more than 1300 people who voted on the finalists. For his efforts Zachary won Dollywood season passes for himself, his parents and his siblings. The contest began on February 20 and was open to all children 12 years of age and under. Smoky Mountain Urgent Care collected nearly 100 entries which were all creative and thoughtful. The voting was open to the public for four weeks and on April 25 Smoky Mountain Urgent Care declared Zachary as the contest winner. Since Zachary won the honor of naming the official company mascot, he will forever be known as the creator of the Smoky Mountain Urgent Care Bear’s name, Dr. Howie Getwell.

“We were so excited to see all of the entries into the contest,” explained Dr. Robin Huskey, Medical Director of Smoky Mountain Urgent Care. “The creativity was just amazing and there were so many that had really thought through their entry.”

Dr. Huskey was on hand to award Zachary his certificate and make photos with the winner at the Sevierville office of Smoky Mountain Urgent Care.

“We can’t wait for Dr. Howie Getwell to be our ambassador in the community for kids like Zachary,” said Dr. Michael Rothwell, President and CEO of Smoky Mountain Urgent Care. “We hope Zachary will be as proud of our bear as we are of his new name!”

Smoky Mountain Urgent Care enlisted Character Impressions from Knoxville to design and build the new mascot. Character Impressions supplies the Smokey mascot for The University of Tennessee as well as several other university mascots and professional athletic organizations’ mascots along with many national company’s mascots. While Smoky Mountain Urgent Care has made other efforts to be involved in Sevier county through contributions to many schools this contest specifically targets younger children.

Dr. Huskey was on hand to award Zachary his certificate and make photos with the winner at the Sevierville office of Smoky Mountain Urgent Care.

“We hope that Zachary and his family enjoy their passes because we are truly grateful for his creativity,” said Dr. Huskey.

Zachary was a finalist in the “Name Our Mascot” contest along with Madison Whaley and Preston Johns. The three names that were voted on in addition to Dr. Howie Getwell were Dr. B. Better and Dr. Phil N. Better. The top three were awarded $100 gift cards to The Forge Cinemas in Pigeon Forge and were discussed frequently throughout the contest weekly on the MIXX 105.5 Morning Show with the Redneck and the Redcoat.

Just like the previous year, we scattered four teams across Sevier County to “surprise” nominated individuals with a purple toilet; although, locals were not surprised this time when the potty showed up at their door. Residents and businesses seemed to be ready for us this year, some more than others. Most participants knew who they wanted to pass the potty to and others took a moment to make the once-a-year decision. All were more than happy to make the donation to the American Cancer Society.

We are very blessed to live and work in such a giving and supportive community. We were able to raise a lot of funds and are still collecting donations!

A BIG thank you to those who participated!

Visit our Facebook for more photos of the purple potty participants.

Smoky Mountain Urgent Care the area’s first certified urgent care center celebrates its first anniversary with a live broadcast of MIXX 105.5’s Redneck and the Redcoat on November 16, 2011. This celebration coincides with Urgent Care Awareness Week.

“We are excited that we can mark such a great year with a live broadcast from our offices on Middle Creek Road,” explained Dr. Michael Rothwell, President and CEO of Smoky Mountain Urgent Care. “They have helped us educate our community about our urgent care which is the goal of Urgent Care Awareness Week!”

Smoky Mountain Urgent Care was designated as a Certified Urgent Care Center by the Urgent Care Association of America in March. The UCAOA strives each year during urgent care awareness week to educate communities and the media about what an urgent care is and can do, this year’s focus also targets legislators. The anniversary celebration marks a year full of accomplishments for Smoky Mountain Urgent Care and includes efforts to educate the community about their services. Smoky Mountain Urgent Care is locally owned and operated by three physicians including Dr. Rothwell and Drs. Carol Parks and Robin A. Huskey. The urgent care also participated in the national convention hosted by the Urgent Care Association of America in May that was designed to help improve patient care in an urgent care setting.

“Participating in the national convention in Chicago was certainly a highlight for us this year,” said Dr. Carol Parks, Medical Director for Smoky Mountain Urgent Care. “The ability to meet with so many different professionals from all over the country allowed us to receive insight on how to improve our own business and share healthcare concerns with organizations like ours so we could better serve our patients.”

Milestones were also made by Smoky Mountain Urgent Care locally as well. Contributions to the community included participation with the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event by raising funds through the “purple potty patrol.” Representatives of the urgent care visited various individuals and businesses in Sevier county bestowing the honor of helping to “flush out cancer” and the option to pass along that joy to business associates or other friends.

Smoky Mountain Urgent Care also showed support to all of the local community high schools, but presented by far the largest gift thus far to Sevier County High School. The urgent care presented the “Smoky Mountain Urgent Care Power Bear” in September to the entire school at a home football game. The large inflatable tunnel includes a bear that is nearly as tall as a two-story building to be utilized to increase school spirit at school events.

“It is important to us to make a difference in our community by providing a service that had been missing while also becoming involved with our patients’ lives,” said Dr. Robin A Huskey, the Occupational Health Director for Smoky Mountain Urgent Care. “An important event for me personally was giving the ‘Smoky Mountain Urgent Care Power Bear’ to Sevier County High School. It’s through involvement in our community that we look forward to reaching out to more patients.”

With the “It means a lot to all of us, including our staff, that our patients and this community have that much respect for us and appreciation for our service,” explained Dr. Rothwell. “We are hoping to continue to grow and maintain that level of commitment to our community and all the patients we serve.” implementation of the mobile flu shot unit and offering shots daily at the office, Smoky Mountain Urgent Care has administered more than 1200 flu shots. Another memorable honor for the urgent care came when they received recognition as one of the Best Healthcare Facilities in Sevier County through the Mountain Press Readers’ Choice awards.
